This debate often leads to arguments between everyone to say the least.
Moreover, there have also been circumstances of battles, criminal damage and even more intense situations over which system is the best. Windows customers maintain Mac customers are egotistic, while Mac customers argue the same about windows customers.
Who really cares?
The reality is that both are about the same. All that is different is the GUIs; a little bit different techniques of starting programs so the Mac loads quicker. Once the OS has started, the only variations might be whether you use a 1 button mouse or a multi-button mouse, and even that change disappears with after-market equipment.
First of all, we’ll look at some advantages and disadvantages for each, then we’ll eliminate some beliefs perpetuated about them. Both windows and Mac OS use thousands of patents between the two.
Typography – Mac’s assistance of typography is as an outcome of decades and decades of engagement with the pre-press market. You get what you see on screen. If you’re into pre-press Mac is the clear success here.
Video Subsystem – windows started designing and using the PCI bus which allows a large non-saturated movie subsystem. Mac, though PCI, has a greatly bottle-necked movie subsystem so if you’re into innovative 3-D, blu-ray or films then windows is the clear success here.
Postscript Support – Mac natively can handle both postscript and PDF systems meaning that they are the clear successful here. Again, if you’re into pre-press, Mac creates a lot of sensation.
Raw Rate – windows PCs have a serious side here. Where time is money, speed can be very essential. Regardless of how well Apple have tied to speed up the Mac they are really just as quick as a windows PC. Windows is the clear success here.
Colour Corresponding – Again the Mac is the only OS and equipment which can handle Colorsync™, “what you see is what you get” shade matching. If you want your images to come out with the same colours you saw on the display, then Mac is for you.
Web Design – Now this will be a hot one. In my view the clear decision here is windows. Now people will disagree with me there but I have a key fact.
95% of the people browsing the Web use windows PCs. If you want to be able to style in an environment where you see very much what they see then windows is a good idea. If you want to make use of .NET or ASP, it’s just simpler to put into practice from a windows PC foundation.
Ease of Use – has to go to the Mac. Windows binary Plug-n-Play is no longer a “Plug-n-Pray”. Apple has been able to sustain restricted management over creators of after-market equipment and as such it will work. What this does mean is a simpler to use program, but one with much less choice for add-ons.
Coolness Element – What can I say? The Mac definitely wins. Look at that new iMac or the iPad. It definitely beats a beige box that houses the PC. Despite the fact that developers are changing this it will be some time before the PC beats the Mac
Overall – I cannot choose one from the other as I think it is down to each people choice….
